Trinity Presbytery's Migrant Ministry

Trinity Presbytery's Ministry to migrant workers currently has two locations at work: one in Lexington County holds a weekly meeting at the Batesburg-Leesville Presbyterian Church, and one in Newberry County at Aveleigh Presbyterian Church.   Both locations have volunteers from many churches helping with the ministry.

The following is a Mid-season report from Jennifer Pilat, the Migrant Ministry Intern for 2007:

11 July 2007
Migrant Ministry Mid- Season Report

Trinity Presbytery

At the close of our 6th week of the Migrant Ministry, I write to you with a joyful heart. Last night we had our most successful Tuesday night gathering of the season (with 27 men, 3 women and 2 small children.) Due to the freeze of the peach crop, there have been fewer migrants working in the fields. Those who are here are working 7 days a week, up to 12 or 13 hours a day, so the attendance has averaged around 20 people each week.

Without fail, the churches of this Presbytery have banded together to create a safe, loving, Christian environment in which these very hard-working men and women may gather to experience Christ’s love and friendship.  Thus far we have enjoyed a variety of foods, including Hamburgers and Hot Dogs, Pizza, Chicken (both BBQ and fried), Baked Ziti and a myriad of salads, fruits and ice creams. A special thanks to Saxe Gotha, Batesburg- Leesville, Seven Oaks, Westminster, Lake Murray, and Shandon Presbyterian Churches for not only providing delicious food but warm fellowship to our brothers and sisters from Mexico.

Each night we close with a devotional and offer thanks to God for various things in our lives. Prayers and thanksgivings are offered in both English and Spanish, and smiles are exchanged freely.  In the weeks to come, we look forward to our annual magic show and the Mexican-American Soccer game.

God has truly blessed us all in the continued support for this ministry.  May you all be as blessed as I have been these past six weeks.

In Christ,
Jennifer Pilat

Migrant Ministry In Newberry County

It has been a year of growth, fun, and fellowship for the Migrant Ministry program in Newberry County.  Be sure to read the report by Josue and Selene Ortega.  Click here to see what they have to say about this wonderful outreach program.

Aveleigh Presbyterian Church continues their outreach to the Hispanic community in Newberry County.  The pictures below are of a recent activity.

Josue reports that the ESL classes are going well despite a recent break.  Previously, the classes had been comprised of mostly Guatemalan and Honduran nationalities.  But recently, more Mexicans have taken advantage of these classes.

A formal soccer league has been formed in Newberry County.   Look for upcoming pictures of games!
